President: Romania is ready for unification with Moldova

Romania is ready to go through the process of unification with Moldova if the residents of the republic express such a desire, stated Romanian President Nicușor Dan.

Earlier, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, in an interview with the British podcast The Rest Is Politics, stated that if a referendum were held, she would vote for joining Romania, explaining this position by the complex international situation and the difficulties that, according to her, the republic faces as a sovereign state. This week, in an interview with the French publication Le Monde, she called unification with Romania a possible scenario for accelerated European integration.

"Romania's position, I believe, has not changed since the unanimous vote of the parliament in 2018. At that time, it was stated that Romania is ready at any moment when the citizens of the Republic of Moldova desire it," Dan told journalists in response to a request to comment on Sandu's statement.

The President of Romania clarified that everything depends on the "aspirations and democratic desires of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova," which Bucharest respects.

"If there is a majority in favor of this project, we are ready," he emphasized.

Moldova declared independence in 1991. The country's constitution enshrines the sovereignty and independence of the state, and a change in its status is possible only based on the will of the citizens. The issue of unification with Romania has repeatedly been the subject of political statements, but a referendum on this topic has not been held. According to data from a sociological survey published in December 2025 by the Moldovan Institute of Sociological Research IMAS, more than half of Moldova's residents are against the republic joining Romania.
