Murder of five-year-old girl sparks clashes in Australia
Hundreds of protesters in the Australian city of Alice Springs clashed with law enforcement, demanding retribution against the suspect accused of murdering a five-year-old girl from an Indigenous family, reports ABC television.
The girl went missing on Saturday, and her body was found on Thursday. On the same day, a suspect in the murder was arrested. He was taken to the hospital after being beaten by local residents.
Around 400 angry individuals gathered outside the city hospital, attempting to reach the man and demanding justice.
Police used tear gas against the crowd, and in response, officers were pelted with various objects. Several patrol cars were damaged. Two police officers and two medical workers were injured.
On Friday morning, the suspect was transferred to Darwin, the administrative center of the Northern Territory, for his own safety, police reported.
