Trump calls on officials and residents of the US to take up sports
US President Donald Trump has declared May 2026 as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in the country and urged all government officials and residents to get in shape.
The corresponding announcement has been posted on the White House website.
"I proclaim May 2026 as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. I call on public officials, educators, athletes, and all residents of the United States to participate in sports activities and engage in physical exercise, especially our nation's youth," the message reads.
The US President noted in his statement that he hopes to involve as many Americans as possible in sports, as this should contribute to "strengthening the nation's power."
In February, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the US Department of Health reported that 40.3% of the country's citizens suffer from obesity to some degree. In the early 1990s, this figure was only 22.9% of adult US residents. Among children and adolescents, the proportion suffering from obesity has risen to a record level of 21.1%.
