Spanish foreign minister proposes EU create single army
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stated that U.S. immersion in the Middle East conflict is the best moment for Europe to demonstrate its sovereignty, which requires the creation of its own unified army.
"We must be free from dependence. <...> We need an army, a common defense potential," Albares said in an interview with Politico.
He added that the idea of creating an EU army is not a rejection of NATO, but if "nothing is happening" in the alliance, then it raises the question of the possibility of relying on its forces for mutual defense. "If NATO no longer provides the security it used to, then we, as Europeans, must do more," the Spanish minister noted.
