Russians traveling abroad should remember the risk of detention and extradition to the US from third countries, Grigory Lukyantsev, director of the department of multilateral cooperation on human rights at the Russian Foreign Ministry, told RIA Novosti.

"Many states not only in the European Union, but also in a broader context have certain obligations for extradition. All this must be taken into account when assessing the risks that people may face if they travel abroad," Lukyantsev said.

The diplomat emphasized that the Foreign Ministry does not determine where Russians should or should not go. The ministry can only recommend not visiting certain countries if citizens believe they may have problems with American or European authorities.

According to information published by the Russian Foreign Ministry, countries with an increased risk of detention of Russian citizens at the request of the US include most of Europe and Latin America, as well as Australia, Canada, Armenia, Israel, Maldives, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Liberia and Morocco. At the same time, the ministry notes that this list does not cover all countries connected with the US by extradition treaties.
