Ebola outbreak: infected American doctor arrived in Berlin

An American doctor who contracted the Ebola virus was flown to Berlin.

From there, he was transported in a special vehicle to the Berlin university clinic Charité, accompanied by a substantial convoy that included, among others, the police.

Six people from among his contacts followed him — among them, presumably, members of his family.

Dr. Peter Stafford and his wife, Dr. Rebecca Stafford, are missionary doctors; they work for the organization Serge, a Christian missionary structure based in Pennsylvania and specializing in providing medical and humanitarian aid abroad.

As reported in the organization's press release, he contracted the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus while treating patients at Nyankunde Hospital near the city of Bunia.

The couple moved to Africa in 2019 and have been working in Congo since then.

Berlin's Charité has one of the largest and best-equipped specialized isolation departments (SIS) in Germany for patients with particularly contagious and life-threatening infectious diseases. The clinic is also closely integrated into national and international epidemic protection systems.
