The Kenya Red Cross reported that information about the fire was received at 3:30 local time on May 28. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
As Associated Press notes, fires in Kenyan boarding schools occur regularly. Some are related to arson, others to faulty electrical wiring.
The deadliest school fire in Kenya's recent history occurred in 2001, when a fire in a dormitory in Machakos County killed 67 students.
In 2024, a fire at a school in central Kenya killed 21 students.
