Iran's foreign ministry: Draft agreement with US provides for formalizing deal through UN Security Council

The draft agreement between Iran and the US contains a clause on formalizing the future deal between the parties through a corresponding resolution of the UN Security Council.

This was stated by the representative of the Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic, Esma'il Bagha'i.

"We are still at the stage of discussing general principles. The 14 sections only outline the main provisions [of the supposed deal] and contain a clause that in case an agreement is reached, it will be formalized through a UN Security Council resolution to comply with the international legal system," he noted at a press conference.

Iran, according to Bagha'i, "does not view the UN Security Council resolution as a guarantee [of the implementation] of the agreement," since it takes into account previous experience when the US "easily ignored" such resolutions.

On May 18, the Iranian agency Tasnim, citing a source, reported that the new proposal from Tehran on resolving the conflict, transmitted by Pakistan to US representatives, contains 14 points. According to the agency, the text focuses on the cessation of hostilities and confidence-building measures.
