Democratic senators ask to check expenses on manufacturing banknote with Trump

Democratic Party senators in the U.S. Congress are seeking a review of the allocation of funds for the production of a $250 banknote featuring the country's sitting president, Donald Trump.

Axios reported this, citing sources.

According to their information, Democratic senators appealed to the Treasury Department inspector general's office with a request to investigate spending on what they called an "illegal $250 bill."

The portal notes that under U.S. law, only the "portrait of a deceased person" may be depicted on banknotes and securities.

"At a time when Americans continue to face rising prices, the Treasury Department should focus on addressing pressing economic issues rather than allocating resources to what appears to be an illegal project for the president's vanity," the publication quotes from the text of a letter from Democratic Party representatives published on Tuesday.

Earlier, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the Washington administration would not seek to introduce a $250 bill featuring Trump into circulation unless Congress supported the move.

As The Washington Post reported earlier, the U.S. Treasury is promoting the idea of creating a $250 bill featuring the sitting president. If this happens, Trump would become the first person in 150 years to appear on a U.S. banknote during his lifetime.
