Buckingham Palace may lose status as official residence of British kings

Buckingham Palace may cease to be the permanent residence of British monarchs. As the German publication Bild reports, after the completion of large-scale restoration work that lasted ten years, King Charles III and Queen Camilla apparently will not move there.

According to sources, the current monarch prefers to remain in his current residence, Clarence House, and also feels significantly more comfortable during stays in the countryside. The heir to the throne, Prince William, is similarly planning to keep the country house in Windsor as permanent housing for himself and his family.

Despite changes regarding the royal family's residence, Buckingham Palace will fully retain its role as the main administrative and ceremonial center of the British monarchy. State receptions, official audiences, visits by foreign delegations, and solemn award ceremonies will continue to be held in the complex's historic halls. In addition, the king's administrative apparatus will continue to operate within the palace walls.
