Prison riot: 25 people killed in clashes, 100 injured
In Sri Lanka, 25 people were killed and about 100 others injured in clashes between inmates at one of the prisons.
According to Reuters, the unrest occurred at a correctional facility in the coastal city of Negombo, 35 kilometers from the de facto capital Colombo.
Details on the cause of the incident have not yet been reported. Sources from the agency in the police said that the prison is still being cleared, and medics and administrative staff are trying to identify the dead and injured. It is known that 4 of the prison guards were killed.
It is noted that local authorities are considering the possibility of involving the military to restore order in the prison. Footage from one of the local TV channels showed a large number of law enforcement officers gathered at the gates of the correctional facility, and a police bus carrying injured prisoners, some of whom are lying on the floor, leaving the premises.
