On the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, manifestations of tension in relations between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attracted attention.
According to Turkish media citing the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Meloni turned to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with a request not to place her next to Trump during official events and the group photo of leaders.
It is reported that the reason for this was recent publications by Trump on social networks, the last of which he accompanied with the phrase: “Restraining order needed” (“Restraining order needed”).
During the traditional group photo of NATO leaders, Meloni was indeed at a considerable distance from Trump.
The information about Meloni's request to Erdogan has not yet received confirmation from official representatives of Italy, Turkey, or NATO.
