About 5,120 people died from heat in Germany

In Germany, about 5,120 heat-related deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the year.

Most of them occurred at the end of June, when the average weekly temperature exceeded +20°C, Reuters reports, citing the public health agency.

According to the agency, about 4,270 of the deceased were people aged 75 and older. More women died than men — mainly because they make up a larger share among the very elderly.

The EU's Earth observation program Copernicus reported that the hottest June on record was recorded in Western Europe: the temperature last month averaged +20.74°C. From June 20 to 28, more than 4,700 people died in France, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands. Abnormal heat is also expected this week in Turkey. Hot weather has led to massive forest fires in Europe. Meteorologists believe that one of the factors in the increase in air temperature in certain areas of the planet was the beginning of a record El Niño in the Pacific Ocean.
