Former Hungarian foreign minister charged with bribery

A statement of suspicion of bribery was filed with the prosecutor's office regarding former Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto; if convicted, he faces up to three years in prison because he resigned from his parliamentary mandate and no longer has immunity, the Index portal reported.

Szijjarto stated in mid-July that he was resigning from his post as a member of parliament and would take a leadership position at the Chinese automaker BYD.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar stated that the country's authorities had launched an investigation into Szijjarto's activities as foreign minister.
"The case of Peter Szijjarto was transferred from the capital's investigative prosecutor's office to BRFK after Istvan Tenyi filed a statement in connection with suspicion of receiving a bribe. Since Peter Szijjarto is no longer a member of parliament, he does not have parliamentary immunity. If convicted, he may face up to three years in prison," the portal writes.

Tenyi is a Hungarian activist who "specializes" in filing statements with the police and prosecutor's office based on media reports as a private individual. The Hungarian press calls him the "king of statements" because the number of cases he seeks to bring to the attention of the authorities numbers in the hundreds.
