AI banned in New York schools

In New York, students and teachers will be restricted in their use of generative artificial intelligence in the new school year.

The measure will affect more than half a million students and teachers in the largest school district in the United States.

The restrictions will take effect at the start of the 2026-2027 school year, and under the moratorium that has been introduced, students from second through eighth grade will be prohibited from using generative artificial intelligence tools in the educational process.

In this way, New York authorities intend to spend the next school year studying the impact of these rapidly spreading technologies on education and determining how their use may affect students' learning.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that the city has decided to take a pause in the use of generative artificial intelligence with respect to students in order to assess the consequences of using such technologies in the educational environment.

The decision was made amid ongoing discussions about the role of AI in schools. In recent years, educational institutions around the world have faced the need to define the boundaries of acceptable use of such tools, because on the one hand, technology can help students obtain and process information, and on the other hand it can also raise concerns about a possible decline in students' independence when completing assignments.
