Mourning in Nepal: the country grieves for 1,300 victims of catastrophic flooding
A day of mourning is being observed in Nepal in memory of more than 1,300 victims of the flooding that occurred on the Bhote Koshi River in the Rasuwa district on August 26.
State flags have been lowered on the buildings of government institutions in the republic and its diplomatic missions abroad. Believers are visiting temples and praying for the salvation of their loved ones.
On August 26, a powerful flood occurred in northern Nepal. The cause was an avalanche on the border with China, approximately 20 km northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing. The flow of rock traveled more than 70 km along the riverbed at enormous speed, destroying settlements and flooding a large area.
The natural disaster left 32,000 families homeless, destroyed about 7,500 homes, and seriously disrupted the operation of vital infrastructure in the central part of Nepal. Nearly 5,000 people, including 589 foreign nationals, are listed as missing.
