U.S. House of Representatives passes resolution demanding an end to the war with Iran
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution requiring American President Donald Trump to end hostilities against Iran.
The vote in the lower chamber of the legislature was broadcast on Tuesday by the C-SPAN television channel.
The resolution was supported by 220 members of the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Republicans — fellow party members of the sitting president. Against it were 204 lawmakers. Thus, the resolution was adopted.
The resolution has no legal force and is advisory in nature. In such documents, lawmakers express their position. The executive branch of the U.S. government has the right to ignore them.
The U.S. Constitution grants the power to declare war not to the president, but to Congress. Nevertheless, in recent decades American leaders have very broadly interpreted the authorizations to use military force abroad granted to them by lawmakers, including for launching what are effectively fundamentally new operations.
