German hospitals and the Bundeswehr have begun emergency preparations for a possible military conflict, including the admission of large numbers of wounded.

Experts acknowledge that the healthcare system is not yet ready for such a marathon. The main challenges are a shortage of hospital beds, a lack of surgeons with experience in combat injuries, the vulnerability of logistics chains, and dependence on medicine supplies.

According to the Bundeswehr's estimates, in the event of a major conflict, up to 1,000 wounded service members could be admitted to German hospitals every day. Under such a scenario, the five military hospitals would quickly reach their maximum capacity, after which civilian medical facilities would have to be brought in.

"Is our healthcare system ready for this? The only answer is: no. What lies ahead of us is a marathon," said Benedikt Friemert, head of the military hospital in Ulm.

To resolve these problems, the authorities plan to adopt a healthcare security law that will link civilian and military hospitals into a single monitoring network.

In Berlin, as Berliner Morgenpost writes, a framework plan called "Civil Defense of Hospitals" is in effect. It sets out the tasks for 12 of the city's clinics in the event of a crisis, lists the criteria for their readiness for an emergency situation, and identifies the sources of funding for preparations for such a scenario.
