Armenia's Constitutional Court approves agreement on TRIPP project

Armenia's Constitutional Court has found the agreement on the TRIPP project to be in conformity with the country's Constitution.

As Pastinfo reports, the Constitutional Court has completed its review of the question of whether the obligations enshrined in the TRIPP agreement and in the charter of Donald Trump's "Board of Peace" conform to Armenia's Constitution.

The court ruled that the obligations provided for by the agreement and the charter conform to Armenia's Constitution. Following this, the documents will be sent to the National Assembly for ratification.

The Constitutional Court accepted for consideration the case on the conformity with the Constitution of the framework agreement on the TRIPP project on August 5. The document was signed by the heads of the foreign policy agencies of Armenia and the United States: on June 1 in Washington it was signed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and on June 4 in Yerevan by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

Earlier, Armenia's Ambassador to the United States Narek Mkrtchyan stated that construction of TRIPP could begin in early 2027.

The TRIPP project provides for the creation of a strategic transit corridor through Armenia's Syunik province. It is emphasized that it will operate exclusively within Armenian jurisdiction and does not affect the country's sovereignty. Under the project, Armenia will grant the United States exclusive long-term rights for a period of up to 99 years to develop the route, through which Azerbaijan expects to establish a land link with Nakhchivan. It provides for the creation of a company with a controlling stake held by the United States, while Armenia will have control mechanisms on matters of principle. At the first stage, the United States is offered a 74% stake and Armenia 26%, with the possibility of increasing Armenia's stake to 49% when the agreement is extended.
