Iran demands suspension of U.S. membership in the IAEA

Iran has raised the question of suspending the United States' membership in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over Washington's violation of the agency's statute.

This is stated in a statement by the Iranian delegation at the 70th session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

In it, Tehran's representatives recall that in 2025 and 2026 the United States carried out massive acts of aggression against Iran, which "constitutes a material breach of the prohibition on the use of force, one of the fundamental principles of the UN." It is noted that, together with Israel, they also "initiated 18 waves of attacks on Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities under safeguards" of the IAEA. "Should the membership of such a country not be suspended, as required by Article XIX.B?" the Iranian diplomats ask.

Article XIX.B of the IAEA statute provides for the possibility of suspending the exercise of the rights and privileges of membership of a state that has persistently violated the provisions of the statute or of any agreement entered into by it. The organization's General Conference may adopt such a decision by a two-thirds majority of votes on the recommendation of the Board of Governors.
