AfD wins state parliament elections in Germany's Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

The "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) party is confidently winning the elections to the parliament (Landtag) of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, having gained 38.2% of the vote, NDR reports, citing preliminary data from the electoral commission after 100% of the protocols were counted.

The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) is in second place with 35.5%. The "Left Party" has 6.5%, while the "Greens" received 5.7%.

At the same time, the party of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the "Christian Democratic Union" (CDU), is receiving 4.9% and is not entering the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, having failed to clear the five-percent threshold.

The BSW party follows the CDU with 4.8% and also fails to enter the parliament of this federal state.

The "Alternative for Germany" party advocates lifting anti-Russian sanctions, restoring relations with Moscow, limiting immigration, revising Germany's relations with the European Union, as well as abandoning the provision of military aid to Kyiv.

The AfD took first place in the recent elections in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, coming very close to obtaining an absolute majority of the vote, while Merz's CDU lost more than half of its electoral support.
