Ottawa suggests Britain could join the Canada-EU alliance

The United Kingdom could join the emerging alliance between Canada and the European Union.

This opinion was expressed by Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

"We need to look at partnership differently. If you look at Canada and the United Kingdom, [it becomes clear that] we share the same values. <...>. Why don't we join forces?" Champagne said in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation, the BBC.

According to him, it is a matter of creating an "alliance of the future." "The world has changed. America has changed. So we need to change too," the minister added.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed beginning work on granting Canada the status of an associate member of the EU. U.S. President Donald Trump, commenting on von der Leyen's initiative, called it "laughable" and threatened "very serious tariffs" if he considered the EU's step hostile toward Washington.
