Qatar will not build gas pipelines bypassing the Strait of Hormuz
Qatar will not build pipelines to transport gas bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, as this is economically unfeasible, Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad al-Kaabi said during the Qatar Economic Forum on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
"We made the decision not to consider pipelines as an alternative, based on commercial and technical criteria," al-Kaabi said, as quoted by the press service of the state company Qatar Energy.
He explained that Qatar already exports gas in liquefied form, and that it would then be necessary first to transport it through pipelines in gaseous form and then to liquefy it at receiving terminals — wherever they might be located.
"This would mean building duplicates of the facilities being constructed in Qatar as part of the North Field expansion project. From an economic point of view, this makes no sense," the minister added.
