Rubio: U.S. ready for talks with Iran on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly

The United States is ready for talks with the Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly; the meeting has not yet been scheduled.

This was stated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

During an interview with NBC News, he was asked about the readiness to hold contacts with representatives of the Iranian authorities. "The president [of the U.S. Donald Trump] has said that he is ready to meet with anyone. This is a president who, as a rule, is ready to meet with anyone, because he believes that in order to solve problems it is important to engage with people. That doesn't mean you will end up agreeing with them, but it is important. So we are open to these [meetings]. I don't think anything is scheduled at the moment, but we are certainly open to something like that, especially if it can lead to something positive and ultimately to achieving the goal for which all of this is being done. Iran must never possess nuclear weapons," the secretary of state noted.
