Court restores CNN, MS NOW and Politico access to the White House

Federal Judge Tim Kelly has ordered U.S. President Donald Trump to restore access to the White House for journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico, ruling that the ban he imposed was unconstitutional.

The judge issued the ruling as part of a lawsuit filed by the three media companies. They challenged the decision of the head of the White House, which he announced on September 18.

"For Trump, this was a serious defeat in one of the highest-profile confrontations with the press during his time in office," the publication says.

Earlier, on his social network Truth Social, the American leader justified his decision by saying that the three outlets "should not be allowed to constantly write or publish fiction and lies." Lawyers from the U.S. Department of Justice, in turn, tried to explain the ban by citing national security considerations.

The escalation of Trump's relations with a number of leading American media outlets has a long history. Back during the election campaign and in his first term, he repeatedly called publications that were inconvenient for him "fake news" and threatened to revise the rules of accreditation at the White House.

According to experts, the September 18 decision was intended to demonstrate to supporters the president's determination to fight the unfriendly press. Restricting access to the White House has traditionally been seen as a tool of pressure on editorial policy.
