China sends two giant pandas to the U.S. after meeting between Xi Jinping and Trump
Two giant pandas have left China for the United States under an agreement between Beijing and Washington.
The male Ping Ping and the female Fu Shuang flew from Chengdu to Atlanta, where they will be handed over to the local zoo. The pandas are being provided to the United States for 10 years.
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the animals' dispatch during his recent state visit to the United States and his meeting with President Donald Trump.
The Associated Press notes that the transfer of the pandas was one of the few concrete results of the visit amid continuing disagreements between the two countries.
The Atlanta zoo was left without giant pandas in 2024 after the previous animals were returned to China.
For decades, Beijing has used the provision of pandas to foreign zoos as one of its instruments of cultural diplomacy.
