Bill Gates compared AI regulation to nuclear disarmament
Reaching an agreement on international regulation of artificial intelligence will be harder than it was to agree on limiting nuclear arsenals during the Cold War.
Microsoft founder Bill Gates said this in an interview with NBC News.
"It will be harder," he said, answering the corresponding question.
According to Gates, self-regulation by companies developing artificial intelligence systems is not enough to ensure the technology's safety.
He believes that law enforcement agencies and politicians should take part in the discussion of safety measures and oversight mechanisms.
"AI is not just a new technology, so that people could say: 'The emergence of past technologies also caused alarm, but in the end everything turned out fine, so this time warnings about the need to deliberately restrain AI are unnecessary.' This really is an evolutionary event," Gates noted.
According to him, humanity has created an "intelligent species" that in many respects already surpasses humans and in the coming years will develop even faster.
