Politician who called for Ebola virus prevention killed in DR Congo
A high-ranking member of Congo's ruling party was beaten to death after taking part in a radio program dedicated to raising awareness about the Ebola outbreak, Reuters reports.
The incident occurred in the city of Butembo in North Kivu province, where an Ebola outbreak has been ongoing for several months.
According to the UDPS party, the acting president of the party's federal executive committee, Marie-Célestin Karondwa, was attacked by residents of his neighborhood after appearing on a radio broadcast in which he promoted measures to prevent the spread of Ebola.
The party stated that unidentified people broke into his home, beat him, looted his property, and set the premises on fire. Karondwa died of his injuries.
The attackers have not yet been detained.
The party stated that the politician became an "innocent victim, because he defended the party's position regarding the existence of the Ebola virus and the threat it poses to the population."
