Turkey's National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has detained Omer al-Khatib, one of the Syrian participants in the 2013 terrorist attack in the city of Reyhanli in Hatay province.
The attack killed 53 people.
According to MIT, al-Khatib was on the international wanted list under an Interpol "red notice." He was detained during an operation as he was preparing to leave Turkey by sea and head to Europe.
It is noted that al-Khatib played a key role in organizing the attack, providing communication and coordination between the direct perpetrators and intelligence officers linked to the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
In May 2013, two car bombs were detonated in Reyhanli. Fifty-three people were killed and dozens were injured. The investigation into the attack continued for many years.
