Russia struck the grounds of the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kyiv with a drone
On the evening of September 30, a Russian drone struck the grounds of the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kyiv, where a research reactor is located.
This was reported by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate.
It is noted that the attack caused a fire, which was extinguished. There were no casualties. An investigation and assessment of the damage are currently underway.
"The reactor itself and the systems important for safety were not damaged. No changes in the radiation background have been recorded, its readings are within the natural background range (0.16-0.20 µSv/hour) and have not changed," the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate noted.
The agency added that, in order to reduce radiation risks, the reactor has been in a shutdown state with the core fully unloaded since February 2022. Its operation is limited to routine maintenance of systems important for safety.
