A commission on Church renewal to be formed in Armenia's parliament
The parliamentary investigative commission on Church renewal will be headed by Arman Yeghoyan, a deputy from the Civil Contract party and former head of the commission on European integration issues, said Arusyak Manavazyan, a deputy from the ruling faction.
According to her, Civil Contract deputies have already submitted to parliament an application and the required number of signatures to create the commission.
"Within two days, the package of documents will be submitted to the speaker of parliament, and if no problems arise, the commission will be formed," Manavazyan said.
The commission will include 11 deputies: seven from Civil Contract, three from the Strong Armenia faction and one from the Armenia faction.
At the same time, the Strong Armenia and Armenia factions have already stated that they do not intend to take part in the commission's work.
On August 20, 2026, the Armenian government approved a program of activities through 2031, which lists among its goals regarding the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) the removal of Garegin II and the adoption of a new Church charter.
On August 24, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that, on his instructions, a report on the AAC crisis had been prepared. The report was prepared by the state non-commercial organization "Center for Public Relations and Information" of the prime minister's office.
Pashinyan has already stated that he intends to use legislative and other mechanisms to secure the departure of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II from his post.
