Merz does not believe that the US will be able to quickly end the military operation against Iran

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed doubt that the United States will be able to quickly end the military operation against Iran.

“Because the Iranians are obviously stronger than thought, and the Americans, judging by everything, do not have a truly convincing strategy in negotiations,” Merz said during a discussion with schoolchildren in Marsberg. His words were reported by the DPA agency.

“The problem with such conflicts is always the same: you don’t just enter them, you also have to exit. We painfully observed this with the example of Afghanistan over 20 years. We saw it in Iraq,” the German Chancellor stated.

The Americans, as he claimed, started the military operation against Iran “quite obviously without any strategy.” For this reason, as Merz noted, ending the conflict is now even more difficult. “Especially since the Iranians, judging by everything, negotiate very skillfully—or just as skillfully avoid negotiations,” the head of the German government emphasized. “At the moment, the situation is quite confusing,” the Chancellor remarked. “And it is costing us enormous amounts of money. This conflict, this war against Iran, has a direct impact on our economic indicators,” Merz explained.

Germany, as he clarified, confirms its offer to deploy minesweepers to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, a prerequisite for this is the preliminary cessation of hostilities.
