Train collision in Jakarta: nearly a hundred injured, 14 more dead

Near the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, an accident occurred involving two trains and a taxi.

In the incident, 14 people were killed, and 84 were injured, according to Reuters.

The collision between a commuter train and a long-distance train took place late on Monday in Bekasi, near Jakarta. It was revealed that the commuter train first collided with a taxi on the tracks before being struck by the long-distance train.

The railway operator reported on Tuesday morning that rescuers had completed the work of extracting those who were still trapped under the debris.

Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, stated that a carriage designated for women only bore the brunt of the impact in the accident. As a result, all the victims were women, and most of them were pinned under crushed metal.

“We had to bring in personnel with specific skills to carry out a thorough evacuation and clearance,” he said.

After visiting a hospital in Bekasi, the country's president, Prabowo Subianto, stated that he agreed to build an overpass near the railway tracks to help address the issue of heavy traffic congestion, adding that the authorities would investigate the collisions. He noted that significant parts of the railway network are not properly maintained.

The accident will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Committee of Indonesia (KNKT).
