Georgia elects new Catholicos-Patriarch
The expanded assembly of the Georgian Orthodox Church in closed format at the Holy Trinity Cathedral Sameba on Monday will elect a new Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia.
The Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church on April 28 selected three candidates for the patriarchal throne: locum tenens of the patriarchal throne, Metropolitan of Senaki and Chkhorotsku Shio, Metropolitan of Ruisi-Urbnisi Iob and Metropolitan of Poti and Khobi Grigol.
The expanded assembly includes all members of the Holy Synod, two clergy and one layperson from each diocese. The Mtskheta-Tbilisi diocese is represented by as many delegates as all other dioceses combined. In addition, the expanded assembly includes two representatives from each monastery, theological academy and seminary, as well as four delegates from the Gelati Academy.
Around 1,200 delegates from across the country will gather at Sameba Cathedral to choose one of the three candidates.
