El Universal: seven large-scale protest actions to take place in Mexico City on World Cup opening day

Seven major protest actions will take place in the capital of Mexico on Thursday, the day of the ceremonial opening of the World Cup.

This was reported by the newspaper El Universal.

According to the publication, participants in the upcoming marches include education and health care workers, transport workers, peasant organizations, retirees from state energy companies, as well as associations of mothers searching for their missing children.

The demonstrators are expected to set out from various points in southern Mexico City, including the area of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and major thoroughfares, and head toward the capital's main stadium, where the tournament's opening match is scheduled. City authorities warn of large-scale road closures and plan to deploy special security cordons around the sports arena to control spectator access.

Earlier, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that authorities would ensure complete order and security during the World Cup and emphasized that the government would not resort to force against the protesters.

In turn, Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada guaranteed residents and guests of the capital the right to peaceful demonstrations and freedom of speech. According to her, city authorities will not allow provocations, but police units will be equipped only with shields, protective pads, and fire extinguishers. The mayor stated that the government would ensure the necessary balance between freedom of expression and the right of millions of fans to unimpeded access to sports and public spaces.
