Constitutional reform in Budapest: Peter Magyar initiated the early resignation of President Tamás Sulyok

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar presented to parliament a package of fundamental amendments to the country's Basic Law, aimed at reforming the state structure and removing key figures of the previous political course from power.

Magyar emphasized that the reform is intended to make the country functional and humane, and the main goal of each introduced point is to exclude a situation in which the Hungarian state could be taken hostage by anyone. According to the prime minister, the prepared changes will become the basis for developing a completely new constitution, which is planned to be put to a nationwide referendum this fall.

The presented bill contains a number of radical innovations. In particular, the document provides for the early termination of the mandate of the current President of Hungary, Tamás Sulyok, appointed under the previous administration. In addition, the amendments introduce a strict limit on the work of members of parliament — no more than three four-year terms, and also establish a maximum age limit for judges of the Constitutional Court at 70 years. The bill also includes a set of measures to strengthen the independence of the judicial system, expand the supervisory powers of the Constitutional Court, and strengthen democratic control over state bodies. One of the key institutional changes will be the creation of the National Office for the Restoration and Protection of State Assets. The head of the Cabinet clarified that until the completion of the full constitutional process, the new head of state will be elected by parliament for a term of up to 5 years, and the voting procedure should take place this summer.
