What Trump and Erdogan will discuss at the NATO summit

Resumption of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on the Turkish platform will be on the agenda of the upcoming July 7 talks in Ankara between Turkish and U.S. presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit.

This was reported by the Turkish newspaper Milliyet.

According to the publication, the meeting is expected to discuss four key groups of issues. The first includes cooperation in the defense industry, in particular the supply to Turkey of engines worth $700 million for the Kaan fighter jet, the lifting of restrictions under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), and Ankara's return to the F-35 fighter jet production program.

The second and third groups of issues concern the economy, in particular bringing bilateral trade turnover to $100 billion and cooperation in the energy sector, including nuclear energy.

Erdogan and Trump are also expected to discuss topics of international and regional security, including the restoration of Syria and its complete clearance of terrorist elements, and the Palestinian-Israeli settlement. According to the newspaper, the leaders of the two countries will not ignore the topic of resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This is connected with the efforts both countries are making in this direction, as well as with Turkey's repeated proposals to once again become a platform for negotiations and a summit on this conflict.

Milliyet recalled that Trump will be the first American president in 17 years to visit Turkey.

Previously, Barack Obama, who led the White House from 2009 to 2017, visited Ankara in 2009.
