Greek media: Israel revised its approach to recognizing the so-called 'Armenian genocide' under the influence of deteriorating relations with Turkey

Israel's decision to recognize the so-called "Armenian genocide" was the result of a radical change in the regional situation and a sharp deterioration in relations with Turkey, writes the Greek publication ProtoThema.

The publication notes that for decades, Israeli authorities refrained from official recognition, seeking not to undermine relations with Ankara. However, against the backdrop of the current crisis in Israeli-Turkish relations, the government has changed its position.

The publication reminds, that the initiator of the decision was Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who called the recognition a "moral and historical duty." At the same time, the cabinet's decision still needs to be approved by the Knesset.

ProtoThema also draws attention to the fact that this step has already provoked a sharp reaction from Turkey, which called it politically motivated and rejected the use of the term "genocide" in relation to the events of 1915.
