Trump would like to see Infantino as UN secretary-general

U.S. President Donald Trump would like FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next UN secretary-general.

The New York Post reported this, citing sources.

Infantino grew close to the American leader during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which was held in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The FIFA president "went out of his way" to win Trump over and even presented him with the FIFA Peace Prize in December last year, the newspaper noted. According to a New York Post source, Trump believes Infantino "enjoys universal respect and has a special ability to bring people together."

It is unknown whether the American leader discussed the idea with Infantino himself or whether the FIFA head wants to take the post of UN secretary-general. In April, he announced his intention to run for re-election as FIFA president in 2027.

The term of the current UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, expires on December 31, 2026.
