A replacement for Russian gas: Armenia starts talking about supplies from Azerbaijan and the TRIPP project

A future pipeline within the framework of TRIPP could become a new source of gas for Armenia, Sarkis Khandanyan, a deputy from the ruling Civil Contract party, said during a briefing.

According to him, if the question of revising the price of Russian gas arises, Armenia will discuss the issue with its Russian partners in a friendly manner. However, in his opinion, diversification is important in this matter.

He noted that during the latest visit of Armenia's Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure to Iran, the possibility of increasing gas supplies from the Islamic Republic was discussed.

"The TRIPP project also concerns a gas pipeline, that is, within its framework a gas pipeline will be laid through the territory of Armenia. And this is probably another opportunity to have an additional source of gas. Although, of course, this is theory, but in practice it is not difficult to implement," Khandanyan noted.

He also did not rule out a scenario of direct gas supplies from Azerbaijan to Armenia.

Earlier it became known that Yerevan had received a letter from Moscow stating the possible unilateral denunciation of the agreement on the supply of natural gas, petroleum products, and rough natural diamonds.

The document notes that if Armenia continues the process of joining the European Union, the Russian side may suspend or unilaterally denounce the intergovernmental agreement of December 2, 2013, on cooperation in the supply of natural gas, petroleum products, and rough natural diamonds.

At present, Armenia purchases Russian gas at a price of $177.5 per thousand cubic meters. For comparison, the market price of gas in European Union countries is about $550 dollars per thousand cubic meters.
