Iran and Armenia discuss a rail route through Syunik

Armenia's Ambassador to Iran, Grigor Hakobyan, stated the need to expand cooperation between Yerevan and Tehran in the railway and trade spheres, Mehr reports.

According to him, connecting the railway networks of the two countries will allow Armenia to gain access to international waterways in the south and at the same time diversify Iran's transport routes to Europe.

Hakobyan discussed the prospects for developing rail service with Iran's Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Director General of the Iranian Railways, Jabbar Ali Zakeri. At the meeting, the parties reviewed the state of the two countries' railway infrastructure and the opportunities for expanding regional transport and economic ties.

Zakeri emphasized the need for Armenia's more active participation in regional transit routes. In particular, he noted Armenia's potential for developing rail transportation within the framework of the North–South International Transport Corridor.

One of the projects that Tehran and Yerevan are considering as part of expanding trade and regional transit is a rail link between Iran and Armenia through the Syunik region.
For Armenia, a rail connection with Iran could open up additional opportunities for access to international transport routes and southern ports.

For Iran, Armenia's participation creates an additional option for overland communication with the European direction.

The talks are taking place against the backdrop of the two countries' efforts to develop transport links and increase Armenia's role in regional transit.
