Russia will not support UN Security Council expansion at the expense of Western countries

Moscow will not support an expansion of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) at the expense of the "Western minority" countries seeking to join it as permanent members; such "claims" appear unfounded to Russia given their "arrogant behavior," Kirill Logvinov, director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, told TASS.

"If there is the slightest likelihood that a reform initiative would weaken the council or inflate it to the point of losing its ability to function, then we will be against such an initiative," the diplomat emphasized. "Objectively, the arrogant behavior on the international stage of the states of the Western minority, which continue to dream of joining the Security Council as permanent members, increasingly leads the countries of the world majority to the idea that such claims are unfounded. And all the more so if this concerns an application from 'enemy states,' the definition of which is contained in the UN Charter."
