Experts say Trump's photo with Xi Jinping was altered with AI
A photograph posted on US President Donald Trump's official Truth Social account, showing him beside Chinese President Xi Jinping, was almost certainly altered with generative artificial intelligence, a data analysis expert told AFP.
The image shows the two men on a red carpet at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington. Trump's face is impassive, while in similar photographs and video released earlier by news agencies he winces at the noise of fighter jets flying overhead.
Matthew Stamm, a data analysis specialist at Drexel University, said the picture almost certainly carried traces left by generative artificial intelligence, AFP reported. In the Truth Social image Trump wears a plain blue tie and a glove on one hand only, while in the photographs published by media outlets his tie is striped and he has gloves on both hands. A woman in the background is also wearing different shoes.
The video and photographs of Trump grimacing next to a composed Xi drew mockery of the US president, including from television host Jimmy Fallon. Commentators also pointed out that he wore gloves and a coat in a temperature of about 18°C.
