Devastating downpours in India: more than 56 people killed by three days of rain - VIDEO
The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has been hit by prolonged torrential rains that continued nonstop for about 60 hours.
According to the region's government, at least 56 people have fallen victim to the disaster, and another 46 were injured. In addition, 107 head of livestock died, and more than a thousand residential structures were damaged.
The highest number of deaths was recorded in the Sitapur district (seven people), as well as in Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, and Balrampur (five people each). The hardest hit by the disaster was the Hargoi district, where 272 homes were damaged.
According to reports by the India Meteorological Department, over a 24-hour period the level of precipitation at key points in the state exceeded 200 mm (227.6 mm in Banda, 224 mm in Fatehgarh). The heavy downpours, accompanied by gusty winds, paralyzed traffic, flooded key highways, and complicated access to pilgrimage sites in Ayodhya. Meteorologists warn of the risk of repeated thunderstorms and flash floods in the eastern districts of the state.
