Trump expects talks with Iran to continue as early as next week
U.S. President Donald Trump said he expects talks with Iran to continue as early as next week, despite having previously rejected the settlement plan proposed by Tehran.
He said this in a telephone interview with Axios.
"I expect the talks with Iran to continue. They want to make a deal, but it's not the deal I want to make," Trump said.
According to Axios, a new round of indirect talks could take place as early as September 28. Qatar is acting as a mediator between the parties, and its representatives continue to maintain separate contacts with the American and Iranian sides.
Earlier, Trump rejected Iran's proposal, which envisaged the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and a return to negotiations on the condition that the naval blockade be lifted, sanctions on oil exports be eased, and the ceasefire regime be restored.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, for his part, said that Tehran is still ready for diplomacy and is awaiting an official response from the United States through mediators.
According to Axios, U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner previously held a new round of indirect contacts with Araghchi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
