French skier Juliette Willmann killed in avalanche
French athlete Juliette Willmann died in an avalanche in Argentina at the age of 29, Le Dauphine reports.
The athlete and her husband were caught in an avalanche on Cerro Creston mountain in Argentine Patagonia on Tuesday at around 12:30 p.m. local time. The tragedy occurred in a hard-to-reach area south of Lago del Desierto. The skiers are believed to have triggered a slab avalanche.
A guide who was nearby notified rescuers about the incident. Before they arrived, people who were at the scene pulled the victims out of the snow and provided first aid. Rescuers pronounced Willmann dead, while her companion was taken to a hospital with injuries. The circumstances of the incident are under investigation.
Willmann competed in the Freeride World Qualifier (FWT) freeride competitions. She finished fourth in the overall standings of the FWT world tour in 2021.
