Macron calls on the United Kingdom to return to the European Union

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on the United Kingdom to return to the European Union, stating that Paris views such a possibility favorably.

Commenting on the statement by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham that the country's return to the EU is one of the possible options, the French leader addressed the British with the words: "Welcome back."

According to Macron, if the British want to rejoin the European Union and Prime Minister Burnham moves in that direction, it would be "very good news" both for the United Kingdom and for Europeans.

Macron also noted that bilateral cooperation between France and the United Kingdom continues in such areas as defense, security, and migration.

"That is a good decision. He is right to show such courage," the French president said, commenting on Burnham's position.

At the same time, Macron emphasized that it is impossible to enjoy the advantages and freedoms provided by the EU while simultaneously rejecting those obligations that seem inconvenient. "Come back," he said, addressing the British.

Earlier, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said in an interview with BBC Radio 4 that the country's exit from the EU — Brexit — had brought the United Kingdom more harm than good.

He also noted that he was not backing away from his earlier statement about wanting to see the United Kingdom return to the European Union during his lifetime.
