European Commission consults with NATO on Russia's nuclear warning

The European Commission is holding consultations with NATO regarding Russia's diplomatic warning about the possibility of a nuclear response in the event of any attempts by the bloc's countries to blockade the Kaliningrad region.

This was stated by European Commission representative Christian Wigand at a briefing in Brussels.

"We are, of course, working with NATO on this Russian threat, but we cannot disclose details," he said.

Answering reporters' questions, he reported that the European Commission learned of this message from NATO and had not received any letters from Russia.

"No, there were no letters addressed to the European Commission," he acknowledged.

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov noted on Wednesday that a nuclear response to any attempts to blockade, for example, the Kaliningrad region is established by Russia's regulatory documents, and that is precisely what Russian diplomats are reminding hotheads in Europe about.

Earlier, the Russian Embassy in Brussels reported that it had sent a diplomatic warning to the Belgian government and NATO headquarters stating that Brussels' "adventurist and irresponsible" course increases the risk of a direct clash with Russia and that Russia "will use the entire arsenal of its weapons in the event of any attempts to blockade Kaliningrad."
