Pashinyan states legal settlement of border issue with Azerbaijan

The border between Armenia and Azerbaijan will be delimited on the basis of the 1991 Almaty Declaration.

Armenian Prime Minister candidate from the Civil Contract party Nikol Pashinyan stated this while answering journalists' questions during the election campaign in Yerevan's Erebuni district, Armenian media report.

According to Pashinyan, the issue has been settled from a legal standpoint, since in 2024 both countries ratified the regulation on the joint work of the border delimitation commissions based on the Almaty Declaration.

Under the declaration, the administrative borders of the former Soviet republics became the state borders of the CIS countries. Armenia and Azerbaijan ratified this document, giving it the force of law.

"Therefore, the issue must and will be resolved in exactly this way, and there is no doubt about it. If during the delimitation process the parties find mutually acceptable solutions, including on individual changes to the border line, all of this will be presented to the public in the most transparent manner possible," Pashinyan stated.

He also confirmed that the delimitation process will proceed in stages—from north to south, from the junction of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border with Georgia to the border with Iran. According to him, after the agreement of individual sections, appropriate work on the demarcation of the border will be carried out.

Earlier, Pashinyan also stated that, if necessary, the southern section of the border, through which the "Trump route" (TRIPP) project is expected to pass, including communications of international importance, may be delimited on a priority basis.
