More than 40 people die due to floods in India

At least 40 people have become victims of floods in the state of Assam in northeastern India over the past few days, and 650 thousand have been affected.

The state's Disaster Management Authority reported this.

"Over the past 24 hours, 10 people died as a result of the flood, bringing the total number of victims of the disaster this year to 41," the authority noted. "In total, more than 653,100 people in 11 districts were affected."

"All services are working on site, responding to the unprecedented flood situation caused by heavy rains in neighboring hilly areas and excessive precipitation. Aid is being provided: food, drinking water, medicines and hygiene products are being distributed to the population, and rescue operations continue in the affected areas," the office of the state's chief minister reported.

The army, air force and other agencies are participating in the rescue operation. Drones are being used to deliver essential items to people cut off from the outside world in hard-to-reach areas. In 10 districts, 487 temporary accommodation camps and aid distribution points have been deployed, sheltering 24,418 evacuated residents.

India's Meteorological Department has issued a warning for the next four days due to expected thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rains in some areas. It is also reported that water levels in many rivers in the region have exceeded the danger mark.
